morning, charlie and norah. the white house meeting yesterday between president obama and speaker boehner occurred after the president extended that invitation to boehner quite quietly on friday. after the meeting, both were described as hopeful. even so, a followup meeting between white house staff and republican congressional staff on underlying details of a fiscal cliff deal apparently achieved little progress. the president met with boehner after huddling friday with house minority leader nancy pelosi and telephoning senate majority leader harry reid. both democrats wanted to make sure president obama will not freeze them out of fiscal cliff negotiations. far from frozen, some set of republicans appear to be warming to higher tax rates on households earning more than $250,000. if and only if that leads to benefit cuts in health care entitlements like medicare and medicaid. >> give the president the 2% increase that he's talking about, the right increase on the top 2%, and all of a sudden, the shift goes back to entitlements. >> but house republicans, the key to any fiscal cliff deals

have spoken to, not very encouraged by what they are hearing from president obama. they don't think that these kind of warnings of unspecified consequences will make any difference on the ground. they say the white house and president obama has warned the government not to attack civilians, yet civilians have been attacked. they have warned the syrian government not to use disproportionate force, yet clearly disproportionate force has been and is being used in this conflict 21 months on, 40,000-plus dead. now, in terms of what will happen next, it's hard to know on the ground here. the rebels are clearly making advances. the north of this country feels like an independent state. aside from attacking from the air, there are not any syrian troops in this area at all, but the rebels still don't have enough power to deliver a knockout blow. most of the fighting is focused on the two big cities, aleppo and damascus. but as of now, they haven't been able to take either one of them. david? >> richard engel, thank you very much. for more on this developing story, i want to go to "the atlant

, president obama and house speaker john boehner sat down at the white house yesterday. they talked. so let's bring in brianna keilarment she is live in washington. so congress is scheduled to break for the holidays later this week. where do we go from here? how are these talks? >> we don't know. that's the thing. we know they spoke. in fact, it's somewhat remarkable that both the white house and speaker boehner's office put out statements simply saying that the two men had spoken. the lines of communication are open. and they were the same verbatim. that is something you can look at as some progress, perhaps. certainly it is promising may be the better way to put it. there is coordination there. they seem to be talking in good faith, trying to keep, i guess, their cards very close to the vest. and that is something that maybe is seen as promising. again, there is no word on actual progress on the fact that they're closer to a deal. and officially at this point, house republicans are still unwilling to bend to the president's demand that those income tax rates for wealthier americans increa
